2009 St. George Greek Festival

Last night hubby and I went to the Greek Festival at St.George Greek Orthodox Church in Downey. It was lots o' fun. When we got there the first thing we did was check out the church. St.George is a work in progress and it's very obvious that it will be beautiful when completed.

This photo that I've posted is what they are currently working on. Eventually pretty much all of the white that you see will end up painted with pictures of Christ, biblical stories, and The Saints.

Now, of course as usual at the Greek Festival we ate WAY too much, but it sure was yummy. Dean and I both had the Lamb Dinner, their specialty. Yes this is a picture of the lambs being cooked on a spit. Oh but the eating did not end there my friends, oh no, lets see Dean had a spanakopita and I had a tyropita. Both are flaky pastries made with Phyllo Dough and stuffed with Feta and other cheeses, Dean's also had spinach. And of course you can never ever leave a Greek Festival without having Loukoumades, an absolutely wonderful Greek Sweet. Sort of like a little round donut balls but not. It's much airier than a donut. They're covered with a honey syrup and sprinkled with nuts. SO Yummy!

Eating is not ALL we did though. We ran into many people that Dean has known since childhood, it was great getting to meet them and talk with them. We also had an opportunity to talk a while with Father John. And this year I made a point to watch the folk dancing. The little ones are just so adorable. I seriously can't wait to have children and have them dress up in the Foustanella (traditional Greek clothing) and dance the traditional Greek folk dances at festivals. Unfortunately I was not able to get a good picture of the kids dancing.

Before leaving Dean and I stopped at the Goldfish Toss. Dean thought it would be fun to win a goldfish... he was right! We won! And it was fun! Since we got him at a Greek Festival we thought he should have a Greek name; and since he lives in water we came up with Poseidon.

All in all it was a great time at the Greek Festival and I cannot wait for the next one! ☺
